Hepatica is a genus of herbaceous perennials in the buttercup family.  They are native to central and northern Europe, Asia and eastern North America.  This is Japanese and one of the very hardy Forest Series.  The plant has red flowers with white stamens.  The flowers are bowl-shaped and appear alongside the new foliage in early spring.  Semi-evergreen, they bulk up quickly to form substantial clumps.  They are tolerant of sun in the early spring but need the shade in summer.  Grow them with Pulmonaria or Podophyllum, somewhere they can be seen.

Care & Maintenance.

They require little maintenance. Overwintered leaves do get tatty and are best removed before the flowers and fresh foliage appear.  A spring mulch is beneficial.  Propagate by careful division of established clumps.  Newly planted hepaticas may take a season to establish.
