Penlan Perennials opened in Spring 1999 as a new nursery with holiday accommodation on an 14 acre smallholding in the Ceri Valley, near Newcastle Emlyn in West Wales. Richard is the nurseryman whilst Jane looks after the holiday cottage and gardens. The nursery is five miles from the sea, north facing at a height of 200m (650ft) and set in traditional hay and wildflower meadows which are organically managed. All our plants are grown by us in netted shade tunnels or lined in open stock areas so are ultra hardy, used to heavy winter rainfall and sub-zero temperatures. We have always raised plants in an environmentally friendly way by using peat-free compost with no chemical sprays or artificial fertilisers. We are lucky to have a spring fed well so can irrigate with a natural water supply. Wherever possible we use recycled materials for packaging and these can be recycled again by you. Our entire aquatic range is totally organic, however we do add a granular chemical deterrent, Vi-Nil®, for Vine Weevil control to all our other stock. This has proved to be 100% effective against native and European vine weevil species over the last six years. The photo below is a typical (1.5 litre) mail order plant sent out by us with a 30cm (1ft) ruler for comparison.

Our primary business is retail mail order and in 2004 we developed one of the first online mail order websites. In addition to supplying Botanical Gardens, the RHS and National Trust, Local Authorities, landscape and garden designers and countless keen individuals we have also successfully exported plants to over 35 countries. It is increasingly clear that gardening with and for nature is very important to many gardeners and we are particularly pleased with the positive and complimentary responses to our website and the quality of our plants. We are delighted to have been listed as a top 100 company in the WWF 'Green Guide to Wales' for our eco-friendly 'footprint'. Every plant displayed on this site is ready for immediate dispatch. If you have downloaded our catalogue or come through the RHS Plant Finder but cannot find a particular plant on the site then sorry but it's either sold out or it's not quite ready yet! Our site only has plants available on any given day - that way there are no disappointments or promises we can't keep! We send out very occasional newsletters with site news, special offers and discounts which do not otherwise appear on the site. You can subscribe to this at any time and just as easily unsubscribe if you wish! See our privacy policy if you are concerned about how we use any information you give us.

Finally ~ we are trying not to expand too quickly so that we can maintain the quality of plant and standard of service we feel you have a right to expect. Please remember that the person you speak to on the phone, who answers your email is the same person that grows your plants, nurtures and waters them, does all the paperwork, packs and  dispatches your order and then checks it has arrived safely!
